Trip to Linc Care

Our last two weeks has been pretty eventful around here. We had a birthday party for Erin and my Grandma and a bunch of birthdays on the Scribner side. We had a busy Sunday but is was a lot of fun. Then last weekend I got to go on my annual scrapbook weekend in Grand Island. It was so nice to get away and just scrapbook for hours on end. I did of course get sick but it wasn't too bad. Carter spent the first part of the week with high fevers from his immunizations and a cold. It didn't seem to phase him that much. That also meant he had his 15 month check up and it went very well. He was 23lbs 14oz which is in the 50th percentile. His length was 31.5inches which was in the 75th percentile, and his head was 48.5 which was the 75th-90th percentile. Dr. Davis said he is doing well and wants us to start working on potty training soon. :( yuck. I guess we will see what comes about. Some new things with Carter these past two weeks. He is really starting to copy what we say. It doesn't all come out right but you can tell he is trying. He is cracking me up every day with all his crazy antics. He will mimic what you do and try anything for a laugh. He has FINALLY realized what gentle is and is treating the dogs very well. He still has his occasional grab or hard pat but he now pets them and gives them *nice* hugs. He loves Nase the most in terms of petting and touching because he will sit there and let him. He loves Tatze when it comes time to play. They play tug of war and Tatze always walks away with the victory. He is also starting to say their names. I am also happy to report that biting is a thing of the past. Two weeks ago I would have said there is no light at the end of the tunnel and there is no way he will ever stop biting. But we cracked down and put him in timeout and I guess that worked. We felt a small victory when we realized that he was not biting anymore. There is still an occasional bite but all we have to say is "do you want to go to time out? no biting" and he stops. These small break throughs are few and far between in parenting so we are relishing in our accomplishment. He has found other things to replace the biting. He now likes to play in the toilet water or throw toys in the toilet. We usually keep the doors closed and the lids down but if you leave it for one second our little ninja has a sixth sense and will make a bee line to the toilet. He is understanding more and more each day. I asked him to go find his cup one day and he went and grabbed it and brought it to me. He has also done the same with his shoes. He proficiently waves and says bye anytime he thinks anyone is leaving or when we leave the checkout aisle of the store. He knows when Chad has his keys in hand, and jacket on that he is leaving for work. He will hear the keys jingle from down the hall while he is eating and he will stop eating and wave bye bye. He will do it until Chad is out the door. He also knows when Chad is home and he waits right by the door to see his dad. It is so cute! He also enjoys reading a lot! One day it was really quite and I looked around the corner and he was sitting in a pile of books reading. He will even talk out loud as he flips the pages. (this is what he is doing in the first picture) Then today I heard him go into his room and shut the door. I waited about 5 minutes and then I checked on him and he was *reading* sitting on the floor of his room. He got either his top right eye tooth or molar this past week as well. Last but not least he was able to show us how *boyish* he really is. On Wednesday night after dinner Carter tripped and fell and hit his head on the coffee table. He hit it just right to cause a cut above his left eye. It bled quite a bit in the beginning but then we were able to get it to stop and it was just oozing. Then we noticed it was pretty deep and the edges weren't together. My good friend Christy came over to take a look at it and said we should have someone look at it. So off we went to Linc care to get some dermabond put on it. (glue) He was a good boy and did well. It made for a little bit of a late night but over all it turned out fine.

Carter's New Room

Checking out his new room
(those bins will have labels on them soon)
(the striped one is what the comforter will look like)

Don't mind the white spots

"helping" us put his room together

He loved the ladder

He was excited to bring his books out to the kitchen this morning
he was sitting down and reading but I didn't get to my camera in time.

Well we finally decided to get in gear and finish up Carter's new room. We spent the weekend moving things over and setting things up and I am happy to report it is finish. Well as finished as it is going to be for now. The walls are still a little bare and we have some spots that have been spackled but need to be painted. I have a few things to add to the walls and we will put more toys in his room to keep it from getting so cluttered in the living room. The room seems kind of boring right now but since he wasn't ready to go into a big bed yet we decided to borrow one of Brian and Erin's cribs and plan ahead for when he does get his big bed. My mom made the comforter for the bed and the curtains. The comforter is going to have a stripe on one side, almost like the striped basket under the changing table, and the other side is going to be a check of some sort. The colors are going to be a dark brown, light brown, a teal like blue and tan. I will also add some more pillows and things like that to the room as we find material. We just wanted to get him moved over before the baby comes and since we weren't expecting an early baby last time we thought we would plan ahead and give Carter ample time to get used to his new room and not feel like the baby took his place. He seems to like it a lot and loves that he has access to almost all of his books. He played in his room for awhile this morning. He didn't have any trouble falling asleep last night and has seemed to have made the transition just fine.

Trick-or-Treat

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

Well Carter had a very eventful second Halloween. He went dressed as a clown (a costume my mom made for him) and he really like the costume. He even didn't mind the hat. We went to a few neighbors homes while it was still light out and then we went over to Grandma and Grandpa Niebuhr's for some more trick or treating. He met up with the triplets for a little bit and then we headed north to Grandma and Grandpa Scribner's house. He really did not understand the trick or treating thing. He just wanted to go inside peoples homes. He also didn't like it when we turned him around to leave and go to the next house. Once we got to the Scribner's Carter got to have his first bite of pumpkin pie. A pie made especially for Carter by grandma with egg replacer. It tasted delicious and Carter was a huge fan. He also has his first experience with staying up way past his bed time. He didn't go to bed until about 10ish. Since it was a Friday night we didn't mind so much. He did however wake up at the same time this morning but took a long morning nap to make up for the missed sleep. All in all we had a great time! We are also happy to report that there was no allergic reactions which we thought might happen with all the kids/peanuts around. We hope you all had a great Halloween!

26 weeks

I am so sorry for the hideous pictures but I have put this off long enough. So here are the long awaited pregnancy pictures.

Halloween preview

Here are a few pictures of Carter and the triplets at Great grandma and great grandpa's house on Wednesday. There are also a few other random pictures I took through the last week or so. There are few of Carter playing with the vacuum. He has a crazy obsession with it. He also "helped" out with the laundry and ended up falling into the basket.

Pumpkin Patch

Pumpkin Patch

We went to the pumpkin patch a few weeks ago and had a great time. It was a really nice day out and Carter enjoyed being outside and all the action going on. Here are some pictures from that.

Family Update

Sorry it has been so long since I have blogged. We have been crazy busy around here trying to get some things done before the new one arrives. I will use this post as an update to our lives lately. First off I never got to post the results from the new allergist. Most of you know already but we had a great meeting with him. He was super helpful and answered all our questions. The bottom line is that we have to stay away from Eggs and Peanuts. His theory is that if they don't react to it, feed it to them. So he believes that the milk and wheat were false positives. With the egg he feels like Carter may be able to eat "baked" egg, meaning baked goods with eggs. He was going to do a cupcake challenge that day but decided it would be best to wait until next year. Which is fine with us since we don't feed him a ton of baked goods. He just thought that since he tolerated his birthday cake and things like that, he might be able to handle egg that is baked. He says it changes the protein and their body no longer recognizes it as egg. Since it has been so long since I have posted I have to report that it really hasn't been that bad. I have successfully made pancakes, muffins, and cinnamon rolls with egg replacer and they all turned out great. Now with peanut we are unsure if it is a false positive or not but the allergist said that he doesn't mess around with them because they can kill. He said he will retest him every year and once his number comes down to a certain level he will do a peanut challenge with him. (same with the egg) So for now we are to stay away from peanuts (and any other nut, for right now) and any food that says it was processed in a peanut plant. We are happy to report that Carter is doing great and is growing like a weed. On other Carter news he got two new teeth one on the top left and a molar on the bottom left. (his mouth is very lopsided right now) They haven't seem to bother him that much. He also got an ear infection this last week but he got some antibiotics and it seems to be cleared up. He is still babbling up a storm and we catch a few new words here and there (if you call it the word) If we hand him a brush he will brush his hair and say "rush, rush" He will say shoe but only after you say it. He will point to it and say "ba" but when we say shoe he will make the "sh" sound. He has perfected "no". He will say "ba" or "ball" for ball and we swear he says apple juice but we have no idea where he got it from. It is probably just baby babble and he has no idea what he is saying but it sounds almost perfect to apple juice. He is still signing "more" "all done" and "please". Please is hilarious because he just sort of waves his hand in front of his body, usually up by his face. we correct it and make him do it by his chest and he will sometimes. His new best friend is Nase and Carter is Nases new Nemesis. Carter pulls, hugs, tackles, whatever he can do to get close to Nase. Nase being the loving pug he is just sits there and lets him do it. We are so proud to have such a kind dog. Don't worry we work with Carter all the time on how to be gentle and we supervise most of their interactions, but there are a few times where Nase is in the wrong place and the wrong time and Carter gets to him. Tatze on the other hand wants none of this "closeness" crap. She runs away the second Carter starts coming. She does however let Carter play tug with her. It is not her first choice but it will do. Carter will do it for quite sometime and it is pretty funny to watch her pull him over. The other fun moment I have to share is that I am amazed at what Carter understands. The other week I told Carter, "it is time for a nap" and he stopped what he was doing and walked down the hall and stood by his crib. He has done it every day since. It is so cute to watch him toddle his little behind down the hall to his room. Just the other day I told Carter "mommy needs to take a shower" so he walked down the hall and stood by my door because he knows he goes in the pack n play when I shower. I also asked him if he wanted to go downstairs to play and he walked over to the gate. I never knew how much he comprehends. Unfortunately he has also stayed in this biting phase more than I would like. He gets a warning and then goes to timeout for a minute. It does seem to decrease it a bit but not much. I just hope it passes soon. He also started throwing mini tantrums. If I don't give him something he wants or I close a door to something he wanted to be in (the refrigerator) he will yell and stomp him feet. Luckily it only lasts a few seconds but man is this kid stubborn. When he has something on his mind he doesn't let it go. He must get that from his dad. :) I think that is about all I have to post on our updates. Sorry again for it being so long. Here are some random photos and a trip to the park we did a few weeks ago.

Stairs and Cups

He can go up them with ease now

And loving it...

Well I thought I would post some happy things going on over here before the dreaded allergist appointment tomorrow. Carter has mastered going up the stairs. It didn't take him long. We kind of forgot about having him practice it and since we just got done organizing the house and making the basement *carter proof* we have been working on it. Now going down we haven't done and I am afraid for that. He is fearless and wants to go head first. The other new thing is that he is drinking from a cup and straw. This is great on many levels. The sippy cup was only going ok. We cut out his night time bottle several weeks ago and he wasn't too thrilled about his sippy cup. He would have good days and bad days but we couldn't get him to drink enough. We had tried straws before and he just didn't get it. BUT i decided one day to try again since I had some cups and straws and he took to it right away and loved it. He is drinking more and is tolerating more liquid at one time. He looks like such a big boy drinking from a cup. The other good thing is now if we forget a sippy cup when we go out he is capable of drinking from a straw. (not that going out is in the future for us because of his allergies). We are proud of him for taking the next step to being a full grown toddler! I will have more updates after the allergist tomorrow. Please pray for us. This has been weighing on our minds and our hearts for weeks. We are confused, scared and feel drained. Any prayers are appreciated.
Don't forget to look at the post below to see how to view Carter's 1 year pics. They are great!

Helping with the dishes

Here is Carter helping Chad with the dishes

Adventures

As the weather has been cooling down we have been spending more time outside. I have been taking Carter and the dogs on walks during the day and even just spending some time taking in the nice breeze. Carter loves going on walks and insists on holding the leash when he is in his stroller. The dogs walk in front of him so the leash comes right by his side. It is pretty cute. Otherwise my days have been filled with redirecting Carter from all of the mischief he can find. I am starting to realize how much of a *boy* he is. He likes to throw things, undo things, take things out, make loud noises and last but not least look for trouble. He would much rather play in the lazy susan or the garbage can then the nice pile of toys we have available to him. We have had to baby proof the house more than I would have liked but as I see new trouble spots arise I realize it is in everyone's best interest to just do it. You will see in the pictures how much fun he had in the lazy susan until we *proofed* it. We were more worried about allergens than anything. He gets really excited whenever we open the dishwasher so we have taken full advantage of it. When they are clean he will take out all the silverware and hand it one by one to Chad. It is pretty funny. When they are dirty we always let him close the door when we are finished and he thinks that is a great game too. We are hoping he will take over dish duty here soon. :) He is walking 80% of the time now. He is starting to prefer it and realized it will get him there faster. On those same lines we had to put shoes on him for the first time in the last few weeks due to the weather and he is not a fan. He walks like a dog in booties. Luckily he is getting used to it now but he still prefers his bare feet so he can get the best balance. We have had a few play dates over the last week or so with Kate a 6 month old, cousin Noah, and our next door neighbor Emma. He really enjoys being around other kids but still needs to learn how to be *gentle*. I think that is about all for now. We are still waiting for his 1 year pictures to be posted so I will let you know when that happens.

Fiedler Get Together!

On Saturday we took a trip up to Nebraska City for a little family fun. A bunch of the Fiedler family got together and hung out and had some good food. We went up a little early to go swimming with Carter in their indoor pool. It was a ton of fun but the water was a little cold so we only got to swim for 30minutes or so. Carter's lips turned a shade of blue and he was shivering so we got him out and gave him a warm bath. He did have a ton of fun in the water. I didn't get any pictures of that because we were by ourselves. We then got ready and headed down to the park and played on the playground, walked around and ate Valentino's pizza. (Carter of course got to eat his own food) The weather was really nice and area is really pretty. After dinner a lot of people went swimming and sat in the hot tub, but we got carter ready for bed and just hung out by the pool. We then put him to bed a little late and we went to bed pretty early. It was Carter's first time in a hotel room and it went pretty well. He slept in his pack-n-play and after realizing we weren't going to get him out he submissed and laid down. We then got up in the morning and had a delicious buffet breakfast (my favorite meal). They made *made to order* omlets and waffles with lots of toppings. We got to hang out with cousins, grandparents and aunt and uncles we don't get to see very often. It was a great time!

Info about allergies - RAST and SKIN tests

Just to warn you this is going to be long a wordy!
As some of you may know Carter has had a rough couple of weeks (or maybe I should say us, since he really hasn't noticed). A few weeks ago Carter was eating scrambled eggs and hours later got some hives. We called the doctor and he tested him for allergies using a RAST blood test. (see below for definition) We were not expecting much to come but from the test but unfortunately it was worse then we thought. Here is some info

What is the RAST test?
Def from Medline Plus:
Medical Encyclopedia
RAST test
The RAST (Radioallergosorbent test) is a laboratory test performed on blood. It tests for the amount of specific IgE antibodies in the blood which are present if there is a "true" allergic reaction.

Description of IgE Antibodies: The immune system produces at least five kinds of immunoglobulins (Ig) or antibodies (IgA, IgD, IgE, IgG and IgM), but the principal one that participates in allergic reactions is immunoglobulin E, or IgE.
Every individual has different IgE antibodies, and each allergic substance stimulates production of its own specific IgE.
An IgE antibody made to respond to ragweed pollen, for example, will react only against ragweed, and not oak tree or bluegrass or any other kind of pollen.
When the antibodies encounter the allergen they are programmed against, they immediately signal the basophils or mast cells to unleash histamine or other mediating chemicals into the surrounding tissue. It is these chemicals - mainly histamine - that cause the familiar allergic reactions.
Histamine released in the nose, eyes, and sinuses, for example, stimulates sneezing, a runny nose, and itchy eyes. Released in the lungs it causes narrowing and swelling of the lining of the airways and the secretion of thick mucus. Released in the skin, it causes rashes and hives. And in the digestive system, it causes stomach cramps and diarrhea.

Info from Riley Childrens Hospital
An allergy test does not diagnose allergic disease. The test determines the presence or absence of specific IgE antibodies. IgE is a necessary component of an allergic reaction. The physician must decide if the signs and symptoms of the illness are consistent with allergy.

Allergy tests are scored in a variety of ways. The blood tests are in classes 0 to 6 and skin tests are scored 0 to 4 plus. The score really has no relation as to how allergic the patient is. How allergic you are is more a function of what happens to you with exposure. Who would you say is more allergic, the patient who went into anaphylactic shock with milk ingestion and had a 2 plus skin test to milk or the patient who had contact hives or urticaria from milk who had a 4 plus skin test to milk? One almost died, the other gets an itchy rash. I look at the test results as an answer to the question- is there sensitization to this allergen? Yes or No?The value of the test again is as good as the history that supports it. It also may depend on what tool is used to perform the test and the quality of the allergen extract used. Also note that for foods, especially in the model of atopic dermatitis- a type of eczema, positive food tests are a 50-50 proposition. Half of the time the positive result may not mean anything clinically- the concept of a false positive. However, the negative food test has great "negative predictive value"- with a negative skin test there is very little chance that the food with cause a problem.

I got this info from another allergy suffers blog and wanted to put it out there for people to help us understand what is going on here for our son and what this means for him. Here is a chart to help you see where Carter is.

This is the chart used for the blood test:
Specific IGE Class KU/L Level of Allergen Specific IGE Antibody

0 <.035 Absent/Undetectable
1 0.35-0.70 Low Level
2 0.71-3.50 Moderate Level
3 3.51-17.5 High Level
4 17.6-50 Very High Level
5 51-100 Very High Level
6 >100 Very High Level

Immunoglobulin E (IgE) 93 (carter's number) normal is 0-15 (this test is separate from the above chart)( we were told that kids with eczema tend to have very high IgE levels)

CARTER'S NUMBERS
egg white 23.30 or a 4
milk 1.26 or a 2
peanut 9.16 or a 3
soybean <0.10 or a 0
wheat 9.17 or a 3
cat dander 7.7 or a 3
dog dander 3.08 or a 2

This was just his blood test he had done the day he got hives from the egg

This last week we were referred to an allergist who did a skin test on him. I don't have the results in front of me so this will be done by memory.

The skin test are scored negative to 4+

egg white 4++
egg yoke negative
cat 3
dog negative
wheat negative
peanut 4+
milk 4+

He then proceeded to do an intradermal test for dogs. This is where they put some serum under the skin. I don't know what the scoring is all I know is positive or negative. His came back positive.

The advice we got from the allergist was to stay away from everything. Including getting rid of the dogs. (even though 3 tests gave 3 different answers).

Here is all of our confusion and questions. For one, the only thing we know he reacted to was eggs. If they would have done just a test for eggs we would have never known about the other test scores and would continue to give all the other things. Unfortunately that is not what happened. Secondly we got a negative skin test for wheat which we have heard that if you get a negative skin test you can be assured that it will be very unlikely to react to that food, yet we are being advised to stay away. Our other concern is if we take away all dairy, eggs, peanuts and wheat it leaves a very VERY limited diet for a growing toddler. Now don't get me wrong, I want to do what is best for my son, but right now we feel like giving him the wheat and dairy will provide a greater benefit to his growing brain and body. (since he hasn't ever reacted to either of them). If he has a reaction I would stay away from the food, but no one can give us statistical data that shows us staying away from dairy and wheat right now will benefit him more in the long run. We just want and need some answers. The other issue here is that our son has had eczema since 1 month old. He was on Soy formula from 3months to 9 months and then changed over to milk based formula. All of these things on the internet say that kids with eczema tend to have a higher false positive rate of skin test due to highly sensitive skin. And if it wasn't mentioned before the RAST test has a 60% false positive rate as well. The allergist seemed to deny this but our pedi agreed as well as other well known web sites. Almost all of our blood tests and skin test show different things. Some say negative, some say highly allergic others lower. What the heck does this mean? One more thing, they say the most effective test in detecting allergies is the "FOOD CHALLENGE TEST" meaning in a controlled environment you introduce the food to your child and see if there is a reaction. Well Wheat and Dairy are a constant "Food Challenge" in our house every day. So how am I suppose to believe the tests? If anyone out there has any suggestions, comments advice we would really apprecitate it. Please pass this on to anyone who might have some insight.

I will say we are taking the egg and peanut allergy very seriously and have changed his diet accordingly. We have informed family and anyone who will watch him what to do in an emergency and we do have 2 epi pens on us. We are also scheduled for a second opinion in 1 month.
I am sorry for the rant, but this has been weighing our hearts the past couple of weeks and has been really hard on Chad and I. We are trying our best to be as educated as we can be for the sake of our son.

New Firsts and Allergies

Sorry it has been so long since I have posted. Things have been a bit hectic around here and I haven't been taking that many photos. I will post some of the new things that have been going on around here. First off Carter is walking. He can take about 10 or more steps unassisted. He is starting to venture out, turn around and do more on his own. The last few days he has really taken off and started walking on his own without a lot of coaxing. He still has quite a few face plants in the ground but he is learning to take them in stride and we are learning which ones are the really bad ones. I think he is getting more confidence as time goes on and I think in another month or so we are going to have a full fledged toddler on our hands. He is also starting to copy a lot more of what we say and do. He waves, clicks his tongue, buzzes his lips and dances when we do. He has also started to do a lot more copying of our words. He seems to repeat what we say with at least part of the sound of the word. Chad asked him the other day if he would say "basketball" He repeated with a 3 syllable word that didn't really sound like basketball the the syllables matched. It was really cute. We have also got him to sign "more" which he is doing more often now. We noticed that his top two teeth next to his front ones are now both in. I think him having more teeth is really going to come in handy with all the food he is eating. He has become an endless pit when it comes to food. He pretty much eats anything and everything and a lot of it. We also put everything on his tray and let him choose what he eats first and we are starting to notice what kinds of things he goes to first and what things he saves till last. He loves all fruit and cheese. He is not as big of a fan of meat but he will eat it, it is just the last thing he eats. Unfortunately along the lines of food, we found out a few weeks ago that Carter has some major food allergies. He had a blood test done and it states he is allergic to Eggs, Peanuts, and wheat. He has mild allergies to milk, and pets. Anyway I am not going to go into details now but we go in tomorrow to meet with a specialist to do more extensive testing and will have more answers then. We have to be very careful for the time being and we are carrying around an epi pen to make sure he doesn't have an anaphylactic reaction. The news was a huge shock to us but we are holding out some hope for the appointment tomorrow and will deal with whole truth then. Please keep us in your prayers.

Another surprise

Two weeks ago Taylor, Trae and Faith came over with a birthday surprise for Carter. Trae and Taylor picked out a book for Carter for his birthday and then they read it to him. It was so cute and Carter loved it. He also enjoyed playing with them and getting some extra attention. Here are some pictures of the day plus a few extra from the week.

The secret is revealed

The secret is finally revealed....

We are due with our second child on February 5 2009. I am about 14.5 weeks along.

Carter's Birthday Bash

We celebrated Carter's first birthday today with our family. Unfortunately Carter was a little grumpy despite all the precautions we took but I still think he had a good time. He wasn't super interested in opening presents, he just wanted to play with toys. He got some really great gifts! Thanks everyone! He got books, riding toys, wagon, puzzles, money and learning toys. We got a lot of them opened and put together and he has been enjoying them tonight. The cake was a hit too! He was a little uneasy about it at first but it didn't take long for him to devour it. We had to cut him off at one point. We decorated with the safari theme from fisher price since he has a lot of their baby stuff. My mom helped me make the cakes which were a lot harder than I had anticipated. I think they turned out pretty good. He was one spoiled little toddler. Thank you everyone for coming and helping us celebrate. The highlight of the day *for us anyway* was having Carter's last gift he opened be a t-shirt that said "I have a secret" on the front and "I'm going to be a big brother" on the back. That is how we told our family that we are going to be adding a new baby to the family in February.

Carter's first birthday!

Carter had a pretty uneventful birthday, but we did have a little fun. We went to lunch at the mall with Erin, the kids and Oma (Giesela). We had a good time out and were able to pick up a gift for a friend while we were there. We came home and had the same old afternoon but we had cake after dinner and that was a hit. Grandma Ellen made a big cupcake for him and at first he was a little unsure but after he got a taste of it he was a happy camper. Happy birthday little one, I hope you enjoyed the day!

Carter's first birthday

Happy Birthday Carter!
