November Blessings

The month since I last did an update has indeed flown by.  I feel like every month that passes the quicker I am realizing time really is flying by and my babies will be in junior high before I know it. We have had packed November but a lot of it has been things that Chad and I have had to do.  We had Lied center tickets, dinners with friends, and extra work things going on.  The kid have been trucking along with school commitments, swimming and piano.  We celebrated November birthday's with the Niebuhr family and had a few other outings.  The boys got to have a sleepover with their cousins at Grandma Ellen and Grandpa Dales a few weeks ago which is always a highlight for them. They had a fun time making videos and playing them backward so it would look like they flew into a tree (instead of jumping out) They also learned a lot about Harry Potter and spent a lot of time doing spells with magic wands.
carter's turkey he had to disguise. he choose to disguise it as Abraham Lincoln and wrote several clues on the back of his paper. he was very proud of this and worked hard on it. we called him Turkeyham Lincoln.

the clues he gave his class about his turkey

he wrote this in school about a Nebraska football player during free writing. it shows how much he loves Nebraska football

Carter has been enjoying second grade and still has a strong love for Nebraska football, or really just football in general.  He is always talking to his friends at school about who is playing and who will win and comes home filling us full of fun NFL facts.  He still spends his free time wanting to play football or trying to learn more about the game mindcraft.  He is very interested in getting the minecraft books for Christmas so he can learn how to build a bunch of cool stuff.  He recently filled up his punch card at school for the second time (you get punched for good behavior and then you get to pick a prize, like eat lunch with the teacher, sit at the teachers desk, etc.) and choose stinky feet. This means you get to take your shoes off and wear socks around the whole day.  He was very excited about it and made sure to pick out some pretty awesome socks to wear.  He is learning to add two double digit numbers and carry the 1.  However they are teaching it so different that when I tried to help him one day he looked at me like I was speaking in another language.  Thankfully he knew what to do, and just forgot to carry the 1 occasionally.  It amazes me how fast they learn and blow past things now.

he named his turkey "dark" because he can hide in the dark

Camden is still loving school and enjoying all the new things he learns.  He loves to come home and tell me all about the book they read (like the perky turkey) or about things they are researching.  I love listening to his stories and seeing how the world works through a 5 year olds eyes.  He has been writing his a's the fancy way because he can, he says.  He has also been getting some vocab words to work on from his reading group and enjoys bringing them home.  He always gets a chuckle out of the english language and tells me things like "should is on my vocab list.  It looks like you would say "shoo-ld" but you don't, you say "shood". There is a silent L in there mom!"  He has also been very sweet about leaving us notes around the house that say he loves us or he loves his brothers.  He will also post signs on his door that say things like "no girls allowed".  I can only hope I can pull that out when they are teenagers so that I don't have to endure their rooms anymore because I am a girl.

Callan's turkey he made in class

Callan had his conferences the other week and they went very well.  He is doing great academically and knows more than he needs to at this point.  She said he gets along well with everyone in class and even though he had a few friends he knew before going in, he plays with all the kids equally.  She said his strength is the calendar.  He knows all his days of the week and months of the year forward and backward. So if she asks him "if today is Tuesday what is tomorrow?" he can answer.  She says he loves to be the calendar helper.  He has great one to one correspondence which I think is due to having 2 older brothers.  The one area he needed help on was cutting in a straight line, or following a patterned line.  It was super funny to see the sheet she gave us from his cutting exercise.  We have a notebook that we fill out in between each class time where we let the teacher know of things Callan did so she can talk with them about it and get them to talk about their lives.  Callan loves to tell me what to write in the book and she always writes back that he told her all about the things I wrote.  He is a big story teller.  This past week Callan was over at my moms house and was eating lunch.  He had lost privileges to watch TV or play video games that day. He told my mom that but then proceeded to tell her that if the TV happened to be on that that was ok. He just couldn't ask her to turn it on.  He also knows how to sweet talk grandma. He asked her one day after the library if he could eat lunch with her.  He eats with her a lot after story time but this day my mom was busy and couldn't.  So when she told him no, he began telling her that he loves their lunches that they are special and that is why he really wants to have lunch with her.  I don't know how you could say no to that reasoning.  I have to say Callan is super lucky that he is the last kid because he really does get to have more one on one time and he loves it!
