December Dreams

The boys waiting to go to Sunday School at church

It is less than a week before Christmas and I still haven't done a December update.  Frankly I think they shorted us some days this month.  I felt like I was on the ball this year with Christmas cards, teacher gifts and other odds and ends with Christmas but I am still scrambling just as much as I usually do.  I love Christmas decorations and seeing our tree lit up every time I walk by the living room.  The kids love all the interactive ornaments and never grow weary of them. Callan is the most fascinated by them and we hear him pushing the buttons over and over.  We have had a break from swimming since Thanksgiving which has been a huge blessing.  With our Monday and Wednesday evenings free I am not sure we would have been ready for Christmas this year. The kids have all had birthday parties to attend, classroom parties, pictures with santa, and Christmas programs to keep up.
The two oldest boys got to attend a Husker basketball game thanks to my dad and my mentor mom at MOPS who gave us tickets.  Camden got to go with Chad and he had a great time.  I wondered if he would be interested for the whole game and Chad said he was, except for the last few minutes where he missed a winning dunk.  He was super stoked about being able to get some cotton candy and just to spend some alone time with dad.  Carter got to go with my dad with his Ameritas tickets and they were able to get free food at the hospitality room which Carter thought was great.  My dad said Carter was super fun to go with because he was engaged the whole time.  He used his roster to find the players and their names and quickly formed some favorites.  His game didn't start until 8pm and was the first game at the arena to go into overtime.  Not just one overtime but two!  It was a late night for Carter but thankfully it was a weekend and it was totally worth it for him.

this is the only picture I got of Carter at the game with my dad. i think it was the first picture he ever took on his camera and he was also able to text it to me. so I am just happy I got a picture.

The kids have also got to do other fun things like go to the movies with the triplets and grandma Ellen (and me too!).  Grandma treated us all to the movie Big Hero 6.  It was a cute movie and the kids loved it.

We have also had some issues over here with listening and telling the truth and have had several days where our elf did not return due to bad behavior from the kids.  I want to say that it helped, and maybe it did a little, it more made me feel better.  We try everyday to keep our kids in check that Christmas is the time for giving, and thinking of those in need as well as the true meaning of Christmas, Jesus's birth.  The kids talk a lot about things they want, and how they can't wait to open presents and we have to have frequent reminders about what this is all about.  I was also able to go to lunch with both my older boys at school which is always something they enjoy.  They eat at such different times that I have to find something to do between them but I know they are glad I did it.  Chad also took of a random Monday and we got to spend the day with Callan.  We called it Callan's day of fun of which he often refers to ordinary days as Callan's day of fun and trying to get us to recreate it.  We really didn't do much except take him out to lunch. But we talked up the day and just spent time with him, which I think is all that really matters to him.  We took him to Chipotle, which he likes but sometimes it is spicier than others and that day was a hot day.  I love hearing him tell us that it is so spicy!

This month was filled with lots of fun festive things but we tried to do our share of just being home and enjoying our family of five.  This means movie nights and pajama days and even some singing dancing and playing games as a family.  Unfortunately Camden got hit with a terrible bug this past week and missed 3 and half days of school.  It was a combination of headache, nausea, fever, sore throat, cough, runny nose and one episode of vomit.  This poor kid was hit hard.  He spent several days not eating, sleeping and watching movies to pass the time. Thankfully by Friday he was marginally better to go to school so he could spend one last day there before the long break.  He missed out on Polar Express day where they get to wear their pajamas to school.  He was sad about it but felt so miserable that it didn't matter.  We let him watch it home in his pajamas after he was feeling a little bit better.  Being off schedule for that many days made me go a bit crazy but I am happy that he seems to be on the mend.  And I can't help but mention that when the vomit happened it happened in the toilet and without my help or my initiative.  There were many other false alarms that happened throughout the illness that also were in front of the toilet and a huge sense of happiness and freedom came over me.  To know that at least two of my children have the wherewithal to get to the toilet and recognize the signs of impending throw up makes me feel like I have hit another milestone in parenting.  A great big beautiful milestone!
after i picked him up on monday early from school he took a nap on the couch

i found this superhero fast asleep in his room one afternoon this past week. i can't remember the last time he napped, so i was sure he was getting sick.  thankfully i was wrong

I got to go out to a friends house to make grinch drinks and eat yummy christmas goodies.
Curt came over one afternoon and asked if he could take my picture for a december photo project he was doing.  I was in my sweats and hair pulled back (which is my norm) so I was a little nervous but the picture turned out nice.  he took it with a really old polaroid camera.

Santa Baby

This year we went back to our bread and butter when it comes to santa and that is the YMCA santa.  It is free and you take your own pictures. Plus we always get there at 5:20 when it starts at 5:30 and we are always the first in line.  You can't beat that. The kids told Santa what they wanted and got a candy cane and we were off.  Carter asked for Under Armor clothes, Camden asked for batman legos, and Callan asked for legos I think.

Making Gingerbread Houses

Every year the kindergartners get to make gingerbread houses out of milk cartons.  We got a note in their Friday folder asking if anyone wanted to help.  I remember going with Carter to do his and was excited to be a part of Camden's as well.  Camden didn't know I was coming so he was very excited when he saw me walk in the door.  I got to sit with him and help him out and he enjoyed being creative with all the candy.  Every piece he put on was something for the house.  The big peppermint was the door a few gummy bears were windows, a jelly bean was the chimney, and a bell shaped gummy candy was the fire alarm.  His house had a secret door and a wheelchair accessible door.  He was so animated, telling me what all he was putting on his house.  He really enjoyed showing his brothers when he got home and explaining all the things he put on it. Here are some of the pictures I got of Camden making his gingerbread house.

Firespring Holiday Party

Last Friday Chad and I got the opportunity to go to Firesprings annual holiday party.  We have heard great things about his company party and were excited to try it out.  We got a discounted room at the Embassy Suits and took advantage of that.  My parents were nice enough to take the kids overnight, which they were equally enthused about.  I borrowed an outfit from my friend Kaci that I loved and had fun dressing up, since it is something I very rarely do.  I had a tough time getting the hang of my heals but otherwise it all came together pretty well.  We got to our room around 5:30 were the hotel gave out some drink tickets for their cocktail hour.  Made sure to use all of those up and not let them go to waste. :)  We then headed into the ball room where the dinner and party were.  We chatted with some old Interact friends and some new friends until it was time to eat.  The dinner wasn't my most favorite but we had a good time.  They had a live band that did karaoke, and Chad and I went up and did "your the one that I want" from Grease as a duet.  We could not hear ourselves at all so we have no idea how we did.  Hopefully no one had to leave because of it. :)  Anyway we had a fun night and enjoyed sleeping in.  The best part was the morning breakfast buffet put on by the hotel.  We met some friends down in the lobby and had some amazing french toast, omelets, bacon and sausage.  The other really amazing part was that we just sat and enjoyed our food while chatting with other adults with no interruptions. It was really nice.  We didn't get the kids until almost noon and then we shipped them off to Callan's preschool teachers church "parents day out" event.  This meant more Chad and Lisa time and the kids got to do crafts, eat snacks, play football and watch movies.  They always enjoy the day and Chad and I find it one of our favorite days as well.  Seven hours of no child time and the money we donate goes to a small churches youth group.  Couldn't be better. Here are some pictures of our fun time.

Thanksgiving Time!

Thanksgiving this year was spread out a little more than usual and that made it nice.  We had the Scribner family on Thanksgiving day and the Niebuhrs on Saturday.  This gave us some time in between to make more food and also relax as a family.  The weather was gorgeous on Saturday which allowed the kids to play outside and get a little more time in the tree house.  We also had a family friendly soccer game and we all tried to get as many balls up in the tree house while grandpa Dale tried to hit them out.  The kids also worked on a puzzle that the triplets brought.  Poor Grace didn't feel very good but was a trooper and made it through the day.  We also took a walk after lunch before dessert and told the kids it was practice for Disney.  Overall we had a good time and good food.
